The Glock 17 Gen 5 Review

The Glock 17 Gen 5 Review

The Glock 17 Gen 5 is the latest iteration of the venerable Glock 17 pistol. The Glock company has been making firearms since the early 1980s, and the Glock 17 has been in production since 1986. It is one of the most popular handguns in the world, with over six million units sold.

The Glock 17 Gen 5 retains all of the features that have made the Glock 17 so popular, but it also incorporates a number of new features. The most noticeable change is that it has a new grip design that includes finger grooves and a revised texture pattern. This makes it more comfortable to hold and easier to control.

The Glock 17 Gen 5 also has a new slide design that incorporates an ambidextrous magazine release. This means that the pistol can be used by left-handed and right-handed shooters.

The Glock 17 Gen 5 also has slightly larger magazine well, which makes it easier to insert a magazine into the weapon. The barrel has been redesigned as well, with hexagonal rifling that improves accuracy.

Glock is still using the same frame design that made them famous, but there are some changes from previous generations. This includes curved serrations on the rear of the slide and a re-contoured triggerguard. The grip now features finger grooves and a more secure texture for better control.

There have been three different models of Glock 17 pistols released since its inception: a full size version with standard capacity magazines, a midsize version that uses reduced capacity magazines, and a compact version with even smaller magazines. All three models are now available in the Glock 17 Gen 5 configuration.

The Glock 17 Gen 5 has a suggested retail price of $749.00, which is about $50 more than the Glock 17 Gen 4. However, it is also available from a number of online retailers at a discount.

So, what’s the bottom line? Is the Glock 17 Gen 5 worth the extra money?

In short, yes. The Glock 17 Gen 5 is an improved version of an already excellent pistol. It features a new grip design that makes it more comfortable to hold and easier to control, as well as a number of other refinements that make it a better weapon. If you’re looking for a reliable, accurate, and affordable pistol, the Glock 17 Gen 5 is a great option.

The Glock 17 gen 5 is the latest iteration of the ever popular polymer framed semi-automatic pistol. We have a Glock 17 generation 1, 2, 3, 4 and now apparently a five.

This review will be broken down by categories:

· Ergonomics/Feel in Hand

· Internal Parts and Operation

· External Features and Controls

· Trigger Characteristics

· Accuracy and Chronograph Data

After doing some research on the net about the Glock 17 gen 5 recently released I learned that they are having quite a few issues with these pistols. From what I read most of the complaints were about jams during ejection of empty cases from shooters who primarily shoot 9mm +P ammo. I also found people who complained about the trigger and how it was “too light” for their taste. I decided that before I wrote this review, I would buy one and see for myself.

Now, as always, YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary). What works well or poorly for me may not be the same for you. With that said let’s get on with the review.

Ergonomics/Feel in Hand:

The Glock 17 gen 5 has a different grip angle than the gen 4s. It is more like the gen 3s. This felt more comfortable to me right away. The grip texture is also different. It has more of a rough sandpaper feel to it. The mag release on the gen 5 is longer than the one on my gen 4s. It protrudes out more. I am not sure if this is good or bad, just different.

The trigger has some serrations that are cut into it for people who like to put their finger there while shooting. For me, they were not an issue but if you’re used to shooting Glocks without them then they may be uncomfortable at first.

I do feel that overall ergonomics are about the same as most other Glock generation models. Some may find it better in some spots, others worse but generally the same feel and control locations with a slightly different grip angle and texture changes here and there along with different factory sights between generations.

Internal Parts and Operation:

The Glock 17 gen 5 has a few new internal parts compared to the gen 4s. The most noticeable change in what I have seen is that they added an extra pin to hold in the trigger assembly which looks similar to the M&P series of pistols. I also noticed that there are two different textures for plastic parts in my pistol, one rough out texture similar to the slide release and mag release on my gen 4s but the takedown levers, slide stop levers, trigger bar, trigger bar spring are all matte black instead of having a rough texture on them like my other Glocks. Lastly there seems to be more tension with the striker safety plunger when inspecting it compared to my gen 3 & 4 guns.

I have seen some people claim that the backstrap is removable on the gen 5s. Mine is not, it’s one solid piece of plastic with the serial number stamped in to it just like all my other Glocks. I did notice that there is a little extra room for my grip plug/extractor tool when removing and reinstalling the backstrap just like there was with the gen 4 guns. It may be possible to slightly shave down or sand away part of the grip to make space for aftermarket backstraps if you feel so inclined but I will not be trying this out myself.

The trigger pull feels very similar to my gen 3 & 4 pistols. The take up is about the same length as all my guns. The gen 4s had a slightly different take up feel/sound to it but that may have been due to the internal polishing along with the connector. The gen 5 trigger feels about the same as my gen 3 & 4s. I measured all three of my Glocks and they are within 0.1 lbs of each other on the pull weights using my Lyman Electronic Trigger Pull Gauge. My gen 4 Glock came in at 6lbs 12 oz, my gen 3 at 7 lbs 2 oz and my new gen 5 measured 6 lbs 15 oz on the dot which puts them all right around 6lbs 10oz give or take a few ounces depending on how you measure your trigger weight by your preferred method. Again, YMMV .

Functionally they all seem to be the same as far as I can tell. The slide lock/release, takedown levers, magazine release, etc. all feel the same and operate the same as my other Glocks.

Sights:

The Glock 17 gen 5 comes with different sights than the gen 4s. They are polymer white dot sights that are factory installed. I have not shot it yet but they look like they will be serviceable and work well in daylight conditions. I do prefer night sights on my defensive pistols but these will do for now until I decide to change them out down the road.

Reliability:

I cannot speak to this yet as I have only put about 100 rounds through it so far. All rounds were FMJ with no malfunctions. I will update this after I have put a few hundred more rounds through it.

So far my initial impressions of the Glock 17 gen 5 are that it is a very reliable, accurate and well made pistol. There are some changes internally but they do not seem to affect function or reliability at this point. The sights are white dot polymer sights and seem to be serviceable. Overall, I feel that it is a great addition to the Glock lineup and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a solid, reliable defensive pistol. Again, YMMV .

I hope this helps give you an idea of what the Glock 17 gen 5 is all about. As always, please remember that your experience may differ from mine as your Glock may have been put together differently or had a different break in process than my gun. As always, please feel free to share your thoughts after you have had a chance to try out the new Glock 17 gen 5 for yourself!
